Why register more than one domain name?
Registering more than one domain name has a number of advantages. The subtle differences may not always be obvious, but you don’t want to have your competitor getting traffic that should be destined for your website.
- Protect your brand. If you register eg. fosterelectrician.com.au you can also register related domains that people may search for such as fosterelectrics.com
- Having more than one domain name does help you in getting better positioning in Search Engine results.
- Employ multiple domain names to direct users that are interested in that part of your business straight to the website or landing page.

Grow your business with .au
A .au domain name (eg. yourbusiness.au - minus the .com) is the foundation of your online brand. It builds trust and is complemented by your social and marketplace presence.
auDA research shows that three in four Australians trust a business more if the website ends in .au, and websites ending in com.au are the most trusted commercial options in Australia. auDA market research was conducted by Sagacity Research and Ground Truth, May-June 2024.

Who is eligible?
auDA have relaxed the eligibility requirements for a ‘.au’ direct domain name licence, with any individual, business or organisation with a verified ‘Australian presence’ eligible to register.3
Australian presence has been defined broadly to include, amongst other things, an Australian citizen, a company registered under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and an entity issued with an Australian Business Number.
Owners of Australian trade marks who do not otherwise satisfy the Australian presence requirement will be eligible to apply for a ‘.au’ direct domain name licence, provided the proposed domain name is an exact match to the Australian trade mark.
Comparatively, the eligibility rules for the third-level Australian namespaces (.com.au, et cetera) include additional requirements for specific applicant entity types, and a link between the domain name chosen and the name or business operations of the applicant.6 This is not the case with the .au direct namespace – an applicant can register any available .au direct domain name, so long as they satisfy the Australian presence requirement.
